British children have eaten curry by the age of five, mussels by the age of six – and sushi by the age of seven, according to a new poll by Giraffe World Kitchen.

In comparison, on average, the 1,500 parents who took part in the study said they first tried curry at age 15, mussels at 18 and sushi at 22.

Ingredients supplier G. Bruce & Co. Ltd, which trades as Brusco, has launched the UK’s first ready-made soft-boiled eggs onto the market.

The eggs are supplied to industry in a pre-cooked form, with their shells ready lasered for ‘ease of opening’ and in ‘environmentally-friendly’ packaging.

The man who led the UK’s independent inquiry in 2013 into horse meat in the food chain, Professor Chris Elliott, has warned that food fraud must remain a top priority, ahead of a food industry conference later this year.

Elliott will tell delegates at the Food Fraud, Culture and Modern Catering Processes conference at Doncaster Racecourse on 26 September that work still needs to be done to ensure there is no ‘horsegate’ scandal repeat.

New data released this month indicates that the salaries of those working in kitchens went up substantially over the last year.

According to the latest report from specialist staffing company Blue Arrow, commis chefs have seen their wages rise by 16.8% from last year, from £16,554 per annum in 2016 to £17,773 in 2017.

Chefs de partie saw their wages go up 6.4% and sous chefs enjoyed a 4.4% pay rise.

More children eating healthy lunches – new DfE data reveals

New data from the Department for Education has revealed that the number of infants eating a healthy meal at lunchtime because of free school meals and universal infant free school meals has increased since last year.

Benefits-based free school meals figures have risen from 86.9% in 2016 to 87.5% in 2017. Universal infant free school meals figures were 84.8% in 2016 and are now at 85.9% for 2017.

Sugarwise, a new mark to certify foods that are low in added sugars, has been launched in Europe with support from Members of the European Parliament (MEP), World Health Organization (WHO) and European Commission representatives.

Premier Foods has announced that Pamela Maclean, Alison Carmody and Vicky Mogford from foodservice distributor Bidfood, have been crowned the winners of the McDougalls Wholesaler Baking Team of the Year competition.
