School meals specialist, Hertfordshire Catering Limited (HCL), exhibited a selection of culinary offerings from its development chef at the Eastern Education & Academies show in Newmarket last week.

HCL chef David Gower gave out a canapé breakfast selection of a spiced apple toddy, a natural yogurt, super food granola and a breakfast brioche with date and cinnamon butter.

A council in Scotland has announced plans to give out free school dinners to poorer children in the region for 365 days a year.

North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) would become the first local body in the UK to provide meals to vulnerable children every day of the year if it follows through with the idea.

Hertfordshire Catering Limited (HCL) chief executive, Lin O’Brien, will retire from her role on 31 March after 25 years working within the county’s school meals service.

Replacing O’Brien, who has headed up the company since 2013, is current chief financial officer, Ian Hamilton, who will take over from 1 April on an interim basis.

Following the announcement that “at least half of all food bought by the public sector in France must either be organic or locally-produced, or come with a quality label by 2022,” the Soil Association’s policy and campaigns manager is calling on Michael Gove to “sit up and take note.”
