​Following the Government's Queens Speech, the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) welcomes the omission of the pledge to scrap universal infant free school meals (UIFSM), says national chair Sally Shadrack. She added: "This allows the Government to rethink a manifesto commitment which would be disastrous if carried out, for children, parents, schools and the school food industry alike.

"According to our own research, if this policy were to be enacted almost 17,000 school chefs would lose their jobs, and the huge taxpayer investment into school kitchens - £150million - would have gone to waste.

LACA updates on marathon challenge for National School Meals Week

Karen Robinson from the National School Meals Week team will run the equivalent of five marathons in the five days of LACA’s annual NSMW event in November.

Nine school caterers have been announced as finalists for the national Big School Bake Off competition, which will take place at the LACA Main Event on Thursday, July 6th.

The finalists were picked after Judges from Unilever Food Solutions and The Children’s Food Trust reviewed paper entries. Recipes had to contain at least 50% fruit in line with School Food Standards in England.

Wolfenbuttel pays tribute to Manchester victims on SCOTY visit

The town of Wolfenbuttel, Germany paid tribute to those who were injured and lost their lives at last week's Manchester bombing by flying black runners with the town hall’s German flag as LACA’s School Chef of the Year 2017 visited the area.

The Conservative Party’s manifesto pledge to scrap free school lunches and replace them with breakfast, could result in over 16,800 catering job losses, according to industry experts.

The School Food Plan Alliance, a collaboration of over 20 organisations supporting schools to improve their school meals, is urging the Conservative Party not to abolish Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) if it wins the General Election on June 8th.

Instead, they want the party to recommit to supporting the School Food Plan and the recent Childhood Obesity Plan.
