Dawn Twemlow, head cook at Intake Primary School, Sheffield, lifted the 2017 Big School Bake Off trophy at the LACA Main Event on 6 July.

LACA chair of events, Neil Porter, has announced the route that the National School Meals Week 2017 ‘Powered by School Meals’ Marathon will take between 13 and 17 November.

LACA’s Main Event wound up with an expressed commitment by the leadership to embed universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) into the nation’s school food structure, and to pursue research into a full evaluation of the programme.

School chef Leanne Oliver-Pulford’s decorated novelty cake not only won that category, but was named overall winner of LACA’s Finishing Touches salon culinaire competition.

The Hampshire County Council Catering Services (H3CS) employee triumphed when judges led by Steve Munkley from the Craft Guild of Chefs looked over entries during LACA’s Main Event annual conference and exhibition from July 5-7.

A group of pupils from Chapter House Preparatory School in York were crowned McDougalls Young Baking Team of the Year at this year’s LACA: The Main Event on 6 July.

The students won the prestigious accolade thanks to their ‘Queen Ethelburga’s Mess’ creation, a recipe which included fresh strawberries, garden mints and locally sourced eggs which met the local produce theme of the competition.

Schools minister Nick Gibb yesterday confirmed that the Government has shelved any plans it might have had to get rid of universal infant free school meals (UIFSM).

ASA advertising food fat high salt sugar

Tough new rules banning the advertising of high fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) food or drink products in children’s media came into force on July 1, according to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The rules will apply across all non-broadcast media including print and cinema, as well as online and in social media.

The rules will apply in media targeted at under-16s, and here's what they include:

* Ads that directly or indirectly promote an HFSS product cannot appear in children’s media.

* Ads for HFSS products cannot appear in other media where children make up over 25% of the audience....
