Last month I mentioned about my trip to Detroit and while it was a holiday and not work of course we cannot help but take great interest in the food. Well the reality was indeed grim, while the music was incredible the food was not. A very unhealthy offering of fried food, chicken, steaks, burgers, prawns etc. the most shocking thing was the total lack of vegetables and salad and fruit. So much so that we had a joke about the lack of carrots in Detroit and Wayne County. Anyway it really shows how much progress we have made in the UK and with our customers in schools and other businesses.

October saw notable number of events including 2 big award ceremonies in London. The EduCatering awards proved to be successful for LACA and it was a true privilege to accept the Award for Marketing along with Sally and Nigel from Elygra. The second event was the Foodservice Catey’s a very prestigious and glamorous event and again to see 2 LACA member authorities receiving awards was fantastic, so well done Surrey Commercial Services and Beverley Baker and also our own Derbyshire County Council.

Looking ahead to this month of course we have the Nation School Meals Week beginning on the 13th November. Thinking back 17 years ago and how it was run we had presentations at the Town Hall to all the pupils who had won the competitions and it’s great to see the breadth and spread of this event now. With #cookeditmyselfie! and Chefs in Michelin starred restaurants can only help promote our industry across the Hospitality Sector and raise the awareness of the skills that we have with the LACA membership.

NSMW Daily Marathon – ‘Powered by School Food’
Good luck to Elygra’s very own Karen Robinson who is running 5 marathons on the 5 days to raise money for this year’s Chair’s Charity the British Heart Foundation as part of the NSMW activities. Please do get involved and if you can spare a few pennies there is a Just giving page for the Chairs Charity and also Karen’s event.
