Billingsgate Fish Market and Seafood School, together with Seafish, are to run a series of educational events this month in a bid to raise awareness of Seafood Week and encourage more people to eat more fish.

Starting on Friday (6 October) Billingsgate, the UK’s largest inland fish market, will be running market visits, fish cooking and filleting classes, as well as educational outreach events in schools.

Billingsgate Seafood School chief executive, CJ Jackson, said: “We will be educating people of all ages about fish and shellfish and working with Seafish to encourage more people to choose seafood when they are doing the weekly food shop, eating out in restaurants, or ordering takeaway.”

During the annual eight-day campaign, Seafish representatives will visit schools to try and highlight the health benefits of eating seafood and give pupils the chance to sample some fish.

Seafish’s marketing manager, Heather Middleton, said: “It is very important that consumers understand the health benefits of seafood and get the opportunity to taste and enjoy fish and what better way to do this than start from a young age in the classroom.

“We know that many people still do not feel confident cooking with seafood and that there is a lack of understanding among the general public about the importance of eating two portions of fish a week for our health.

“These educational events will help to educate people about these key messages and lead to more people eating more fish more often.”

Lidl, Morrisons, Hilton Worldwide and Saucy Fish Co. are among the businesses to have signed up as partners to the initiative.
