Blackawton Primary School wins inaugural Peter Melchett Award
Melchett was one of the founding members of Food for Life and he played a key role in ‘transforming’ the food children eat in schools. The Food for Life standard ensures that 1.9 million meals are served daily, which are environmentally and sustainably sourced.
Blackawton Primary School won the award for growing and cooking sustainable food at their school. The school council allows pupils to voice their opinions to help contribute towards change.
Schools across England who carried out ‘outstanding work’ with food were nominated for the award. The two other finalists were Reay Primary School in London and Sandfield Close Primary School in Leicester.
The Food for Life Conference 2020 took place on 13 February and highlighted the need to focus on children’s food, health and sustainability. Food for Life has created a network of over 5,000 schools across England who are committed to ‘transforming’ their food culture.
