Caroline Spelman congratulates School Chef of the Year regional finalist

12 Mar 2012

Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman, the MP for Meriden, has congratulated her constituent Judith Tyrell for her performance in the West Midlands regional final of the LACA’s School Chef of the Year competition.

On her website, Spelman blogged: “I think this was a tremendous achievement against formidable competition from other school chefs who really are becoming the supercooks of today.

“Judith, who works at Heart of England Secondary School in Balsall Common, came third, which is a very creditable placing in such a strong field.

“I note that the judges were very taken with Judith’s ‘Pot of Gold’ delicious dessert – a pastry case with poached rhubarb & strawberries topped with an orange sponge served with a smoothie.

“I suspect that the lucky pupils at Heart of England School would commend it just as highly!”

Judith, who works for Solihull Catering Services, won the Highly Commended Dessert award. Winner of the regional final was Karen Coffey of City Catering in Stoke on Trent, who works at John Baskeyfield CofE Primary School.

The Highly Commended Main Course went to Donna Westwood of Dudley Catering & Client Services, who works at Witymoor Primary, and cooked a Quorn & Butternut Squash Curry.

LACA’s showpiece annual cooking competition to find the nation’s top school chef is sponsored by Maggi from Nestlé Professional.
