Childhood obesity strategy: LACA reacts to government announcement

18 Aug 2016

The Lead Association for CAtering in Education has responded to the government's childhood obesity strategy, which aims to significantly reduce England’s rate of childhood obesity within the next ten years.

LACA chair Sally Shadrack, said: “LACA welcomes the government’s moves in tackling childhood obesity, and looks forward to working in partnership to ensure that the school food service continues to be served to as many children as possible across the country, to the benefit of children and families everywhere. LACA recognise the significant investment made by government and excellent work catering staff and school leadership do to promote healthy choices.

"We would urge all schools to adopt the new school food standards which guarantee that children who eat school meals receive a healthy and balanced meal every day and look forward to discussing with the Government how best to implement this, while LACA members will gladly support primary schools with any new criteria for the healthy rating scheme outlined in the strategy.

"Healthy food and physical activity during all school years is vitally important to raising a generation of healthy adults and making sure this is upheld in schools across Britain should be at the forefront of the fight against obesity.”

An overview of the plan can be found on the LACA news section of the website.
