City of Cardiff Council pick up Footprint Award

02 Jun 2016

City of Cardiff Council won the Social Impact and Diversity award at last week's Footprint Awards 2016 for its Summer Holiday Enrichment Programme.

The programme is a joint initiative between City of Cardiff Council (Education Catering), Cardiff and Vale UHB, Public Health Wales, Sports Cardiff and Food Cardiff and is delivered in partnership with schools and community settings.

Its core aims is to enhance children’s quality of life and reduce learning loss during the summer holiday period.

Judith Gregory, senior client officer, said: "The School Holiday Enrichment Programme has been fantastic for raising the profile and increasing the uptake of our school meals service. The programme has continued to strengthen our relationships with schools whilst developing new ways of working with partners which has enabled us to make the most of our school facilities and staff."

The pilot has been working with five local schools and community groups in Community First areas during the summer 2015, to provide breakfast and lunch together with an element of education, sporting activity and fun.

The project has been delivered in a safe, nurturing environment to help reduce the isolation and hunger often experienced by families in the school holidays. This summer the council is extending the programme to more schools and community settings.
