Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s in-house caterer, City Catering has crowned Riley Gregory its Junior Chef of the Year 2017.

The 10–year-old, who goes to Longton’s St Gregory’s Catholic Academy, won the title after beating off competition from 29 children from 20 primary schools across Stoke-on-Trent.

Councillor Janine Bridges, cabinet member for education and economy at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “This is the second time we have run the competition and it was great to see so many young children taking part and enjoying cooking.

“Many children grow up never learning how to cook and are at a loss when they finally move out and have to fend for themselves. There are plenty of meals which are child and adult friendly and cooking together helps bring a positive long-term attitude towards food, eating and healthy living.

“All of the young chefs taking part displayed real talent and should be very proud of their efforts.”

Over three days each pupil, aged seven to 11, took part in a cook-off session. In the sessions they had to prepare, cook and present their dish within 60 minutes.

Riley cooked chicken encroute, a piece of chicken with bacon lardons wrapped in a puff pastry case served with baton carrots, baby boiled potatoes and cheese sauce. His dish will become an option on menus across schools in the city from September. Riley was presented with the award by Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Joe Clarke.
