#EatThemtoDeafeatThem campaign proving a success in schools
The campaign was launched to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables. Veg Power research found that 80% of schoolchildren were not eating enough vegetables.
The campaign is split into six weeks where children are encouraged to try new vegetables, including carrots (week one), peas (week two), sweetcorn (week three), broccoli (week four), tomatoes (week five) and pepper (week six).
This week is currently broccoli, which is a good source of fibre and protein. Broccoli contains vitamins A, C and E as well as iron and potassium.
Schools up and down the country have been 'inspiring' their pupils to eat more broccoli. For example:
- St Martha's Primary School in King's Lynn created a 'broccoliasaurus' to get children to eat more vegetables.
- Rudyard Kipling School kitchen team in Brighton put on a broccoli display for children to learn more about its nutritional value.
- All the students at Highcliffe Primary School took home a Veg Power UK pack with a poster to complete to help teach them about the importance of vegetables in a balanced diet.
According to celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, children who saw the #EatThemToDefeatThem adverts in 2019 were twice as likely to eat more vegetables.
