Free school meals receives doctors’ note

29 Sep 2015

A letter urging the government to keep the Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) scheme has been signed by 40 leading health professionals.

Published in The Sunday Times, the letter details that the scheme is vital to tackling the obesity crisis and forms part of a strategy that can make a difference to the health of future generations.

The letter states that the scheme could end up “paying for itself many times over and reduce the spiralling costs to the NHS of treating obesity and diet-related illnesses.”

Amongst the signatures is Professor Baroness Hollins, British Medical Association; Malcolm Clark, Children’s Food Campaign; and Kawther Hashem, Action on Sugar.
