08 Sep 2015

Judith Wase, senior chef manager at Fenstanton Primary School in Lambeth, took first prize with her Summer Strawberry Cupcakes with Malted White Chocolate Frosting.

Harrison Catering Services held its own version of the Big School Bake Off, inspired by Unilever Food Solutions, for cooks and catering managers across its London borough contracts.

Second prize was awarded to Gail Carey, catering manager of St Mark’s CofE Primary School in Croydon, and third prize to Naseema Rasheed, catering manager at Coston Primary School in Ealing.

Each competitor had to create their best muffin and flapjack, and their bakes were judged on presentation, taste, texture and recipe and method.

Competitions were held in Bexley, Croydon, Ealing and Lambeth with the top two competitors in each borough advancing to the final, held at Unilever House in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Nicola Turk, Harrison’s director of group schools, said: “Home baking is an important part of Harrison’s food offer. It provides a superior product for our customers, while giving our talented catering staff another outlet to demonstrate their skills and creativity.

“Introducing Unilever’s Big School Bake Off in our business was a great opportunity for our cooks to showcase their skills. We were absolutely blown away by the quality of the baking that our finalists produced and that made selecting the winners a real challenge.”

Amongst the prizes for the winners was a food mixer, with attachments provided by KitchenAid and afternoon tea for two at the Ritz for the first prize winner.
