LACA celebrates Roast Dinner Day & importance of apprenticeships

13 Nov 2024
LACA, the school food people, celebrated Roast Dinner Day during National School Meals Week (11-15th November) while also highlighting the importance of apprenticeships to the education catering sector.

The theme for today is the ever popular Roast Dinner Day where school caterers have the opportunity to showcase the best local British produce. Download resources here.

Chair of LACA Judith Gregory said: “We are half way through the week already. Always a favourite with school caterers and pupils alike. We know many of you will be serving a roast dinner today whether a traditional roast or a plant-based alternative. The meals are always lovely.

“Let’s see some of your pictures be it at the counters, a plated meal or happy customers. Tell us what makes your roast dinner special. Is it the use of local suppliers? Freshly sourced vegetables? Or something else? There are always lots of free resources to download. This year you will have seen some additional resources from the Soil Association as we once again work together to promote this popular meal.”

LACA has developed four industry and sector specific apprenticeships in partnership with national training providers HIT Training and Cambrian Training. They include:

  • Level 2 School Catering Assistant / Production Chef
  • Level 3 Senior Production Chef
  • Level 4 Hospitality Manager
  • Level 5 Operations Manager

The unique feature of these apprenticeships is that they are nationally recognised qualifications designed by school catering and training professionals to provide those within this diverse industry with the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are essential to their vital role in feeding our nation’s schoolchildren.

Gregory added: “I will soon be setting off to Folkestone to Mark Sargeant’s restaurant where LACA is hosting a fabulous Chef’s Table. Mark is LACA’s school meals ambassador and will be creating a stunning menu and serving it to VIP’s and other supporters of the apprenticeship scheme which has proved so valuable to so many caterers.

“LACA is keen to continue to promote its four recently developed industry and sector specific apprenticeships. This is partnership with national training providers HIT Training and in Wales with Cambrian Training. Have a great Roast Dinner Day everybody.”
