LACA joins forces with Natasha's Foundation to find excellence in allergen management

20 Feb 2023
LACA, the school food people, in conjunction with the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation are introducing a new accolade at the LACA Awards for Excellence.

Natasha's Foundation was set by up Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE in memory of their daughter Natasha who died in 2016 after an anaphylactic reaction to a sesame seed allergy.

LACA and Natasha's Foundation are looking to recognise the impact that Natasha’s Law has had in the management of food allergies in school with the introduction of an Excellence in Allergen Management Award. The LACA Awards for Excellence aim to identify great practice across the school food sector.

The winning school food catering service will show exceptional practice in the management of food allergens as well as outstanding commitment to educating children, staff, governors and parents in the subject.

Nominees must be able to show the following:

  • Exceptional practice in the management of allergens within the workplace, including working practices, record keeping, staff training and signposting.
  • Clear and concise communication of allergen practice to all school stakeholders (pupils, parents, staff and governors)
  • Examples of how they are using the service to promote allergen management and educate stakeholders in its importance.  This should include information around the school service areas and on the school website as a minimum.
  • Please provide evidence of use of the LACA Allergen Management Risk Analysis Process if appropriate

LACA introduced a risk assessment process for management of allergens in 2018 that its members have free access to as they recognised that this was a subject where caterers needed much more support and information.

Since 2021 LACA and Natasha's Foundation have worked closely together to ensure that schools are provided with both the knowledge and the support they need to ensure risks are not taken with children’s lives in relation to food allergies. This award is designed to highlight the best service operations that others can follow.

The winning service will not only win a cash prize but will also get the chance to work with Nadim and Tanya as well as the team at Natasha's Foundation and LACA. For more information go to www.laca.co.uk/awards or contact laca@dewberryredpoint.co.uk.
