LACA Main Event to highlight universal impact & challenges of school meals
This session will cover the challenges of operating the school meal programmes in the USA and some of the ‘innovative’ activities that have eased the pain of cost, supply chain and labour issues. Delegates will understand the universal challenges and discover the positive impact of opening the communication channels to help us learn from each other.
Kate, executive director of the Urban School Food Alliance, has a passion for child nutrition and has dedicated her career to improving access to healthy food for all children and their families. Katie has shared her expertise throughout the United States and around the world as an invited speaker.
Stephen is a director in the Boulder Valley School District, a large Western District with 56 schools and 28,000 pupils. Since March 2020, US School Nutrition programmes have been heavily challenged by the supply chain, rising food costs and labour shortages. He will talk about his experiences and pass along strategies used to counteract these issues.
Colorado is the first state to pass a public ballot measure to provide free meals for all students. Stephen will share how this came together, the implications of this policy and what is expected in the 23-24 school year when this policy is implemented.
