LACA reacts to 5p increase in UIFSM funding in England

05 Dec 2024
LACA, the school food people, says it is ‘extremely concerned for the future of the industry’ after the Government announced that universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) funding will increase by just 5p per meal to £2.58.

Commenting on the news Judith Gregory, chair of LACA, said: “We are extremely concerned for the future of our industry following the announcement that UIFSM funding in England will increase by just five pence per meal to £2.58, which falls significantly short of the actual cost of provision, currently estimated at £3.16 per meal.

“We are alarmed that the uplifted allocation is not due to be made until June / July 2025; in the next financial year. The delay in confirming funding beyond this financial year only adds to the uncertainty and pressure faced by schools and catering providers.

“Additionally, we note that the published national funding formula rate for the 2025/26 academic year has been set at just a 0.7% increase, equating to an additional two pence per meal. This is simply not enough to address rising costs or ensure the sustainability of school meal provision.

“LACA will continue to advocate on behalf of our members, pressing for urgent and realistic funding adjustments to protect the viability of school meal services and ensure that every child has access to a nutritious meal at school.”
