01 Mar 2022
Secretary of State for Education Nadhim Zahawi held a meeting with Jamie Oliver after the chef called on the Government to ‘level up’ school food for every child no matter where they live.
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, Bite Back 2030 and leaders of over 600 schools sent a letter to the Government encouraging them to rethink, review and reform how the school food system works in England to combat the growing childhood obesity levels.
Zahawi announced on Twitter: “A really positive meeting with Jamie Oliver today (28 February 2022). It’s clear we both want the same outcome- good-quality, healthy food being served in schools across the country.
“There are so many school working incredibly hard to deliver brilliant meals, while raising awareness of healthy eating. It’s now time for all schools to meet the standard that all children deserve. Lots of exciting things to come in this space!”
Zahawi said he would be:
- Strengthening compliance of the School Food Standards, including a pilot with @foodgov
- Creating pilot programmes to help children cook healthy meals
- Investing in a governors training programme
