New QMS Video Highlights Health Benefits of Red Meat

18 Aug 2017
Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) has this week released a new video – ‘The Meat We Eat’ - highlighting the importance of beef, lamb and pork in maintaining a healthy diet.

Available to view on QMS’s YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kI_46CLadY&feature=youtu.be,) the video contains a wealth of information including the nutritional benefits and recommended daily intake of red meat, as well as tackling some of the myths surrounding it.

Dietitian and health & education co-ordinator with QMS, Jennifer Robertson said: “Eating a healthy balanced diet, including proteins such as beef, lamb and pork, helps keep us fit and active and our new video aims to explain that role in a simple and engaging way which all ages can understand.

“Lean red meat not only tastes good, but is a great source of protein, b-vitamins, iron and zinc. With more than a third of Scotland’s young people lacking in iron, red meat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet”, although the video does state that most people do eat a sufficient amount of meat.

Included in the number of activities that the QMS undertakes each year to communicate the importance of a healthy diet, is its school voucher initiative developed to support Scottish secondary schools encourage pupils to learn to cook quick, tasty and healthy meals.

The scheme, which offer schools a £100 voucher to be exchanged at local retailers for top quality meat, was found in response to Scottish schools not being able to afford fresh red meat products for cookery lessons and pupils consequently leaving without the skills to cook simple, healthy meals.
