Andy Jones, chair of the PSC100 Group, appeared on BBC Sounds where he suggested public sector caterers had a 'moral responsibility' to introduce sustainable foods to their menus.

He explains how his own farming family background informs his drive to reduce meat served across the public sector in schools, hospitals, care homes, prisons and the Armed Forces.

Jones is also aiming to increase the choice of vegan and vegetarian options across the public sector which serves in excess of one million meals a day.

Jones said: “We have got a moral responsibility at hand, we do lead the health and wellbeing of the nation but also we need to leave a legacy and leave a world that everyone can enjoy.

“We are in charge of people when they are born into this world, sadly when some of them go into care as well and in the interim. We can shape their lifestyles very early on during their school years.”

Launched in 2011, the PSC100 group comprises caterers, dietitians, politicians, healthy eating campaigners and suppliers who operate in the public sector and use their collective 'clout' to drive government legislation and action towards helping people adopt healthier lifestyles through catering and education initiatives.

The PSC100 group are not only encouraging caterers to reduce the amount of meat they are serving by 20% but to improve its quality too.
