Rotherham Council’s Riverside Catering, which supplies meals for 66 primary schools across the borough, has achieved Bronze Certification under the Food for Life Served Here Award.

Food for Life Served Here provides independent endorsement that Riverside Catering is meeting the school food standards by serving food prepared from fresh, sustainable and locally sourced ingredients.

A presentation took place at Anston Hillcrest School on Friday 25 January, when the school, on behalf of the Council, was presented with an award certificate by the Soil Association’s Food for Life campaign.

Cllr Gordon Watson, deputy leader and cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Rotherham Council said: “Congratulations to everyone at Riverside Catering on the hard work they put in to achieving this standard – and especially Miss Bradshaw and the team of cooks at Anston Hillcrest, who underwent the inspection last year.

“The award is a real testament to Riverside Catering’s commitment to serving healthy food, from sustainable and locally sourced ingredients.”

The Food for Life Served Here Award from the Soil Association recognises caterers who are serving meals that go beyond meeting the School Food Standards and ensure that children are being served healthy, nutritious meals.

Parents can be ‘reassured’ that meals served to pupils in Food for Life Served Here accredited schools are minimum 75% freshly prepared and made from ingredients that are ‘fresh, local and honest.’

A typical days menus include: homemade meat and potato pie; homemade cheese and tomato pizza; jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise; fresh seasonal vegetables; diced potatoes; unlimited salad bar; unlimited bread.  Homemade fruit crumble and custard; cupcake; fresh fruit salad; Muller yoghurt; milk.

Ian Nutt, head of development at Food for Life, said: "Food for Life Served Here caterers are leading the way in improving food culture in schools.

“Achieving a Food for Life Served Here Award is a fantastic accomplishment and a true reflection of a caterers’ commitment to serving school meals that are nutritious as well as tasty.

“We know that good food is a crucial part of the school day and with fresh, healthy meals being served, students are equipped with the fuel they need for their learning and development."
