School caterer Aspens Services hosts healthy eating roadshow for Runcorn students

10 May 2012

School caterer Aspens Services recently hosted a healthy eating interactive roadshow for students at St Chad’s Catholic and Church of England High School in Runcorn.

More than 200 year eight students, aged 12 and 13, took part in the event which included the chance to taste fruits including dragon fruit, pomegranates, durian and star fruit and try lemonade made using fresh lemons (and compare it with a shop-bought version).

In addition, two Aspens chefs, helped by students, competed in a healthy eating 'cook-off' using fresh ingredients chosen by their helpers to produce nutritionally balanced meals which were judged by the audience.

Students also tried out the special 'smoothie bike' – which features a blender operated by pedal power to create fruit smoothies – and made their own juice combinations from fresh fruit and vegetables.

Elaine Davies, PSHE coordinator at St Chad's Catholic and Church of England High School, who organised the healthy lifestyles day, said: "This was an excellent morning of activities which perfectly complemented the work the students did on other areas of health during the rest of the healthy lifestyles day.

"The sessions organised by the Aspens team highlighted important issues such as the need for a balanced diet and why eating 'five a day' matters.  Both pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience."

Aspens food and beverage executive Ken Tee added: "The students threw themselves into the activities and had a fantastic time trying different ingredients, working with the chefs in the cook-off and making their own juice drinks and smoothie combinations.

"As a caterer, we provide our customers with healthy, high-quality meals, made using fresh ingredients and using local, seasonal produce. We also love working with schools and students to show just how much fun it is to learn about food and healthy eating and support schools' work to encourage students to live well. Events like this are a great way of doing it."
