School food action plan website launched
A new website has gone live that publicises the work taking place to improve the quality of school meals and encourage pupils to eat more healthily.
Hosted by the Department for Education, it is the brainchild of Leon restaurant chain co-founders John Vincent and Henry Dimbleby, the pair drafted in by Education Secretary Michael Gove to oversee the development of school meals.
It offers visitors a video presentation by the pair outlining what the School Food Plan aims to do and how they are encouraging industry stakeholders, schools, parents and children to get in touch to let them know what they think about meals at school.
The website explains: “Why are we doing this? To significantly increase the number of children eating good food in schools, we are putting together a clear vision of what good food in schools looks like, finding lots of examples of what works well and a detailed action plan.”
It includes news of visits by Vincent and Dimbleby to schools and invites children, parents, teachers and caterers to suggest schools where their video team can see innovation and good ideas in action.
Reflecting their own business philosophy, the website outlines the four pillars along the way to publishing a School Food Action Plan in spring 2013.
These are: Positivity (finding excellence and spreading the word about it); Action (identifying and publicising practical solutions to common problems); Cooperation (openly working in collaboration with everyone in school feeding); Quick Wins (getting good ideas put into practice right away).
Among other features of the website is a library of research relating to good nutrition, health, behaviour and educational performance.
