Scotland set to extend free school meals to all primary-age children

The Scottish Government appears ready to agree a spending plan that will see the phased introduction of free school meals for all primary children.

Finance Secretary Kate Forbes has struck a deal with other parties that should guarantee the Budget Bill can clear its final stages. It covers the extension of free school meals, an enhanced public sector pay deal, new Pandemic Support Payments and additional funding to support environmental, active travel and energy efficiency initiatives.

Under the terms of the deal the Scottish Government has committed to finding free school meals to primary pupils on a phased basis, by August 2022, starting with pupils in Primary 4 from August 2021, which is also when schools and nursery care providers start the implementation free meals for all early years pupils aged up to five.

Jayne Jones, chair of ASSIST FM, the Scottish local authority service providers association, said: “This is excellent news for children and young people in primary schools all over Scotland, who will soon be able to enjoy a healthy lunch free of charge.

“This will go a long way to tackling the consequences of poverty and food insecurity, and creates a fair and equal catering service for all children in early years and primary schools.”

Kate Forbes added: “A green recovery lies at the heart of the Scottish Government’s policies and today we are delivering significant new investments.”
