Chef Ellis Barrie

Encouraging students to pursue a career in hospitality, Great British Menu chef Ellis Barrie is to host cooking classes at a local Welsh school.

Barrie – of the 2 AA Rosette restaurant Marram Grass (Anglesey) – will be helping 13 GCSE pupils studying catering and hospitality at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern this year.

Kicking off this month (15 October), the first session will focus on knife skills, with all children to be given a set of chef knives and whites.

Barrie said: “I’m so excited to be working with Bodedern and its catering students.

“It all came about through one of my chefs at the Marram Grass, whose mother works at the school and asked if I would get on board.

“There is such a struggle to find chefs in the UK and it is down to the restaurant industry to do something about it. Even if none of the students become chefs, I think educating children about food and provenance is so important.

“I’ll be bringing in amazing local produce and will showcase the very best of what North Wales has to offer.

“The first session will be in October, with three to four more after that (per year).

“I hope to get other local chefs and producers involved too. I believe, as a community this is our duty.”
