UIFSM update
14 Nov 2014
The UIFSM scheme was developed to help schools prepare for the implementation of free infant school meals from September 2014. This support service will be in place until December 2015. Every pupil in reception, year 1 and 2 attending a state-funded school is now entitled to a free nutritious healthy school lunch as part of the UIFSM scheme.
The Department for Education has recognised, as a result of LACA and CFT’s work, that some schools and local authorities will require support beyond the introduction of UIFSM. A support service is in place to help ensure the UIFSM policy is firmly embedded.
A list of criteria has been posted below for schools and local authorities to consider if they are eligible for direct support.
- Currently have UIFSM take-up below 87%, and/or very low level of school meal take-up in general.
- Are unable to provide infant pupils with a hot meal option.
- Are a small school and struggling to make their service breakeven.
- Have seen UIFSM adversely affect the school’s Pupil Premium applications.
- Currently supply a hot meal that is considered not to be sustainable or viable in the longer term.
- Are currently delivering UIFSM in a way that has a significant adverse impact on other areas of school life e.g. delivery of school curriculum, provision of meals to other pupil groups.
- Has an In House catering service and therefore unlikely to receive support from a ‘parent organisation’.
- Have capacity issues due to increased take-up of UIFSM or the impact of supplying other schools in the local area.
- Would benefit from a visit to a similar school that has overcome some of the challenges being faced with UIFSM.
- Would benefit from a visit by a specialist in Marketing, Training, Culinary skills, Nutrition and or Food Specialist who could support and add value to your existing operation.
