Veg City Challenge pledges councils to encourage healthy eating
The Veg City Challenge wants contestants to create an 'innovative' grab’n’go recipe that is 'packed' with vegetables. All participants are required to submit a fully costed recipe by Monday 8 July 2019. The winning recipe will be championed and trialed at secondary schools, venues and food outlets across the city.
Caterers will be required to: include at least two types of veg, have a low production cost, be easy to make, able to sell at volume, portable, appealing to teenagers or young adults and the recipe must be shareable with local and national networks.
Encouraging young people to be healthier is an important issue. Nationally, 80% of children and 95% of teenagers are not eating enough vegetables. Grab’n’go veg options have become crucial in encouraging more young people to be healthier.
Recipes will be run through a nutritional database and given a score. A shortlist of between four and six recipes will be made and the caterer will be invited to attend the competitive cook-off.
Chef Michael Bremmer will be on the judging panel along with hospitality and catering 'expert' Julie Barker and school pupils. The contestants will be judged on their recipes taste, ease of eating and profitability.
