Waltham Forest Catering removes more sugar & salt from school meals

07 Nov 2024
Waltham Forest Catering has become the first London Borough to drop the standard sugar and salt-laden school ketchup and replace it with the 14 allergen free Real Good Ketchup, specially designed for children.

With National School Meals Week 2024 on the horizon (11-15th November), the focus on healthy eating in schools is more important than ever says Waltham Forest Catering.

With 75% less sugar and 80% less salt than other named brands, Real Good Ketchup gives schoolchildren across Waltham Forest Borough a healthier choice and removes the equivalent of a sugar cube from every plate at mealtimes.

Susan Brettle, operations manager at Waltham Forest Catering, said: “We are always looking for ways to reduce sugar and salt on our menus while keeping the meals nutritious and tasty for the children. We are looking forward to working with Real Good Ketchup to help reduce sugar and salt in every kitchen in the Borough, whilst also being able to serve those children with allergies a product they can enjoy too.”

Waltham Forest Catering produces around 15,000 nutritious meals a day and serves almost 50 East London schools across Leyton, Leytonstone, Walthamstow and Chingford.

Liz Jones, founder of Real Good Ketchup, added: “Real Good Ketchup has been available in independent schools for some time. However, we have always wanted to work with councils to serve children all over the country with a healthier and nutritionally-compliant ketchup.

“Waltham Forest Catering is a perfect fit for us as a ProVeg School Plate Champion, its approach to nutritious eating including vegan and vegetarian options is brilliant for schoolchildren across the Borough. We are delighted it is making this ketchup change.”
