Conservative Party manifesto plans to scrap free school meals for all primary school children up to the age of seven have prompted the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) to contact members for a survey on the likely impact.

The survey has been sent out, with responses due back today (Wednesday, May 24th) and a preliminary assessment of the potential impact of scrapping universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) available by the end of the week.

Doncaster Schools Catering hosts eighth annual awards

Doncaster Schools Catering hosted its eighth annual awards at Doncaster College on May 17th.

The awards were attended by 200 staff and were presented by mayor Ros Jones, director Peter Dale and the catering company’s suppliers.

The Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) chair, Sally Shadrack, has criticised the Conservative Party’s announcement to replace universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) with a new breakfast scheme as an ‘ill thought out reversal’.

The Conservatives made the pledge to end the scheme this morning at the launch of its manifesto and replace it with a free school breakfast initiative to increase the overall schools budget by £4 billion by 2022.

Tony Mulgrew, the chef at Ravenscliffe High School in Halifax, won the #cookeditmyselfie competition organised by the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) as part of the 2016 National School Meals Week celebrations.

The competition saw LACA ask for tweets showing the best examples of school meals and offered a prize of £500’s worth of marketing resources or equipment for the winning entrant. A custom built waste station was chosen as the school’s prize.

First activities announced for National School Meals Week

LACA has announced the first planned activities for National School Meals Week 2017 (NSMW), which will take place from November 13th – 17th.

New for this year is the NSMW Daily Marathon – Powered by School Food. Karen Robinson, a member of LACA’s NSMW team, will be running a marathon through LACA’s many regions supported by as many LACA members, school pupils and supporters as possible.

Hilary Witt Cost Sector Catering Awards public sector lifetime achievement

LACA honorary treasurer, and the organisation's very first chair, has received the Public Sector Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Cost Sector Catering Awards. It was made in recognition of her work in helping set up the association and build its importance and influence since then.

After receiving the award at the Hilton London Metropole on Thursday, April 20th, she said: "I'm totally shocked. This is such a lovely surprise. I really thought my days of picking up awards were long gone."

The Y&H Spring Event & AGM on March 15th was held on the river Humber aboard the P&O Pride of Rotterdam.
