Premier Foods has today (24 May) announced the five schools going through to its McDougalls Young Baking Team of the Year final (12 July).

Open to primary schoolchildren aged 7-11, the competition required teams to bake either a sweet or savoury dish around the theme of ‘local produce,’ with a look to develop their interest in cooking and teach pupils about food sourcing and provenance.

Wholesaler Fresh Direct distributed over 4,000 peaches to Oxfordshire primary schools this week, after its client no longer required the fruit.

The idea came about after Fresh Direct took delivery of the already paid for consignment, only to find out the restaurant group they were intended for no longer required the fruit.

Caterer Sodexo has this week backed the newly launched ‘Veg Power Fund,’ which hopes to “transform children’s current attitude to vegetables” and “drive up veg consumption” across the UK.

Latest figures from The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveal that a greater proportion of 11-year-olds are obese in the UK than the US.

For 2016, the number of obese 11 year-olds in the UK reached a “record high” at 20%, and 18.5% in the US.

Shockingly, the figure was even higher for 11-15 year olds – accounting for 23% of British kids and 20.6% of American.
