Wolfenbuttel pays tribute to Manchester victims on SCOTY visit

The town of Wolfenbuttel, Germany paid tribute to those who were injured and lost their lives at last week's Manchester bombing by flying black runners with the town hall’s German flag as LACA’s School Chef of the Year 2017 visited the area.

Tracy Healy, from Ravensthorpe Juniors, Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, noticed the tribute during her visit to the German town as part of her prize for winning the School Chef of the Year 2017 competition.

The Conservative Party’s manifesto pledge to scrap free school lunches and replace them with breakfast, could result in over 16,800 catering job losses, according to industry experts.

The Daily Mirror reported a warning from experts that 21% of the 80,000 school catering workforce may lose their jobs is the Conservative Party scrapped free school meals for pupils between five and seven-years-old.

The School Food Plan Alliance, a collaboration of over 20 organisations supporting schools to improve their school meals, is urging the Conservative Party not to abolish Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) if it wins the General Election on June 8th.

Instead, they want the party to recommit to supporting the School Food Plan and the recent Childhood Obesity Plan.

Conservative Party manifesto plans to scrap free school meals for all primary school children up to the age of seven have prompted the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) to contact members for a survey on the likely impact.

The survey has been sent out, with responses due back today (Wednesday, May 24th) and a preliminary assessment of the potential impact of scrapping universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) available by the end of the week.

The Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) chair, Sally Shadrack, has criticised the Conservative Party’s announcement to replace universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) with a new breakfast scheme as an ‘ill thought out reversal’.

Tony Mulgrew, the chef at Ravenscliffe High School in Halifax, won the #cookeditmyselfie competition organised by the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA) as part of the 2016 National School Meals Week celebrations.

The competition saw LACA ask for tweets showing the best examples of school meals and offered a prize of £500’s worth of marketing resources or equipment for the winning entrant. A custom built waste station was chosen as the school’s prize.
