Providing its meals to 58 schools across Islington, Caterlink was this week awarded an “above average” score for its Green Kitchen Standard – the first school caterer in Islington to do so.

A campaign launched yesterday by Food for Life and Pukka Herbs – ‘Know Your Roots’ – is encouraging children to get outdoors and promote “intergenerational links, food education and environmental knowledge.”

UK schools are set to receive £26 million funding this spring to help boost breakfast clubs in disadvantaged areas and “give more children a healthy start to the day.”

Announced by the Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, yesterday (19 March), the funding will be paid for by the soft drinks levy and is believed to benefit over 1,770 schools, including the Department for Education’s 12 Opportunity Areas.

A new survey looking at hospitality professionals’s attitudes towards social media and the effect it has employability today (19 March) revealed that 70% of recruiters are “influenced” by what they find on candidates’s social media accounts.

Carried out by job site CV-Library, the study was undertaken on 1,100 hospitality workers and 200+ recruitment professionals across the UK, and found that:

Latest figures from Public Health England’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey last week (16 March) revealed that children have cut back on sugary drinks by over a third in the past 10 years, as well as overall sugar and saturated fat.

Looking at 2,300 households across Great Britain, the rolling survey compared data from 2008-2010 to 2014-16, showing:

  • Children aged 4-10 have reduced their overall sugar consumption by 6%, equivalent to 3.5 teaspoons
  • The same group also reduced fizzy drink consumption by 36

Last week (8 March) saw Cityserve and five local West Midlands schools partake in homeless charity, St Basils, Soup Week - raising over £100 to help “break the ‘cycle of homelessness.’”

LACA’s annual celebration of school food reaches a milestone this year, with National School Meals Week (NSMW) 2018 marking the 25th anniversary of the event.

New research has found that the “health and environmental impact of food” is important to the majority of British children, despite the growing obesity crisis.
