Hilary Witt Cost Sector Catering Awards public sector lifetime achievement

LACA honorary treasurer, and the organisation's very first chair, has received the Public Sector Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Cost Sector Catering Awards. It was made in recognition of her work in helping set up the association and build its importance and influence since then.

After receiving the award at the Hilton London Metropole on Thursday, April 20th, she said: "I'm totally shocked. This is such a lovely surprise. I really thought my days of picking up awards were long gone."

All aboard the Y&H Spring Event & AGM

The Y&H Spring Event & AGM on March 15th was held on the river Humber aboard the P&O Pride of Rotterdam.

Skipper and Y&H Regional Chair, Jo Webster welcomed 70 delegates from local authorities, contract caterers and suppliers to the nautical themed day. Tracy Healey was congratulated on her recent SCOTY 2017 win with flowers from SCOTY 2016 and fellow Yorkshire lass, Kath Breckon.

Date set for National School Meals Week 2017

LACA has announced that National School Meals Week will take place from November 13th – 17th this year.

The event is historically held in the first week of November, but has been moved this year because of difficulty in pinpointing when schools and local authorities are holding half term. The move aims to provide the opportunity for as many of its members as possible to participate.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, and Angela Rayner, the shadow secretary of state for education, has announced that the next Labour government will commit to providing free school meals for all primary school students.

At the launch event in Lancashire today (April 6), Corbyn will say: “No child in the UK should go hungry at school. By charging VAT on private school fees, Labour will make sure all primary school children, no matter what their background, get a healthy meal at school.”

LACA national chair Sue Kilbey

Sue Kilbey, who was national chair of LACA from 2002-2003, died on March 24th following a long illness. Neil Porter, the South West LACA regional board member, where Sue was a regional chair for a number of years, said: “We would like to acknowledge her support for LACA from both a national and regional point of view. She will be sorely missed.”

Sue’s work for LACA came in addition to her day job as head of service for Somerset Catering Services, the county school meals provider.

South West LACA Awards recognise excellence

The second annual South West LACA gala dinner and awards took place at the Woodbury Golf and Country Club near Exeter earlier this month.

A catering exhibition and regional AGM took place earlier in the day on the 17th before the awards. Regional chair Brad Pearce presented the awards on the night with various sponsors.

Lunchboxes filled with chocolate, crisps and cold fast food are damaging to children’s health and education, according to the chair of the Lead Association for CAtering in Education (LACA), Sally Shadrack.

Tracy Healy wins School Chef of the Year 2017

Tracy Healy, a school cook at Ravensthorpe Junior School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire has been named School Chef of the Year 2017 after winning the final of the competition against nine other regional winners yesterday (March 2nd).

Her main course of lamb kofte and cherry tomato skewers followed by a dessert of rhubarb and ginger fool was good enough to convince judges she deserved the title at a cook-off in Stratford, Warwickshire.
