New research has found that 41% of Brits think we’ll be eating lab-grown meat and fish in the next ten years – citing shortages as their main reason followed by environmental and sustainability concerns.

In a survey of 2,000 people, rising food costs were highlighted as a concern, with 90% of people that do a weekly shop saying they would “start cutting back on spending if they were to rise again” - admitting that fresh meat and fish would go before fruit and vegetables.

Last night (8 March) saw LACA crown its 2018 School Chef of the Year – Michael Goulston from Peartree Spring Primary School (Hertfordshire) – after outshining the other nine finalists with his two-course meal created with an 11 year old school pupil in mind.

Representing the east of England, Goulston served a main course of oven-baked Southern crumbed chicken with herb mousseline, gnocchi and vegetables, and coconut cheesecake with pineapple and strawberry compote and tuille biscuit for dessert.

Recycling and waste management provider Biffa has launched its ‘Food for Fuel’ campaign, to encourage businesses to segregate and dispose of all quantities of food waste responsibly.

Compared to Scotland and Northern Ireland - where recycling food waste is, by law, mandatory for businesses – there is currently no legislation in place in England or Wales.

Foodservice price inflation in the UK dipped to 2.5% in January, according to figures from the CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index, primarily due to an easing of seasonal and supply trends. The figure is a fall from year-on-year inflation of 5.1% recorded in December 2017.
