The Good Food Futures programme, backed by £1 million of investment, aims to give children a greater understanding of where food comes from and the many career opportunities available in the industry.

The programme will also include more farm visits, healthy cooking lessons and put more locally produced healthy food on school menus.

Willie Macelod, UKHospitality executive director for Scotland, said: “This is a very positive step from the government to promote Scotland’s fantastic food industry, of which hospitality is a huge part.

“The first minister rightly speaks very positively about talent from Scotland working in some of the best kitchens around the world. We want to encourage as many young people from Scotland as possible to embark on a career in hospitality and this new scheme will help us highlight the opportunities that our sector provides.

“Talented young people from all over Scotland have a chance to make a name for themselves in an exciting sector and the government’s support should put more eyes on the great work we do.

“With obesity increasingly the focus of Scottish government, enhanced education and understanding of food will be crucial to tackling the issue.”
